Sexy Summer Skin & Hair

Summer is undoubtedly the sexiest season.  Its the season of revealing as our wardrobes change from sweaters, pants and boots to bikinis, shorts and flip flops.  All year we look forward to transforming our pale bodies and dull hair into a glowing, sun-kissed tan and luminescent highlights BUT, too much time in the sun can leave you with tired, ashy skin and dry, brittle hair with split ends.  Take precious care of your skin and hair this season by treating yourself to a few easy (and delicious) DIY home treatments.  Here are some of our favourite Summer Skin & Hair Remedies to bring your Sexy back:

Natural SPF for Sexy Skin:

We won’t get into the great debate about the health of sunscreens, but when you have a choice, natural is usually better.  Most people know that coconut oil is great for the skin and will help you get a nice rich, bronzed tan if applied while in the sun, but did you know why?  Its because the oil has natural SPF properties.  The SPF factor of coconut oil is quite low, around 2-8 SPF.  This is why you are able to develop a lot of colour while avoiding a sunburn (with repeated application).  There are other natural oils you can use on your skin as a substitute for sunscreen that contain even higher SPF factor, up to around 50 SPF!  Here is a chart from Style Me Green Studio that shows all the different oils with SPF properties.

These oils will not only protect you from UV damage, but also hydrate and soften the skin.  Many of them also contain anti-aging antioxidants that protect and heal free radical damage from pollution, for example.  If you want to try your hand at making your own Natural Sunscreen, hit your local natural beauty or health store for the ingredients and follow this recipe.

DIY Scrubs for Sexy Summer Skin:

Sugar Cookie Scrub:

  • 1/2 cup Organic Brown or Palm Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Coconut Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla Bean Powder or Vanilla Extract

Salty Bee Scrub:

  • 1/2 cup Sea Salt
  • 1/2 cup Organic Honey
  • 3-4 drops of a Floral Essential Oil like Lavender, Geranium or Rose

– mix ingredients in a resealable glass jar

– apply to moist skin after a shower and rub in a flowing, circular motion working your way from the feet toward the heart and same thing with the arms.

– rinse off with lukewarm water and gently pat the skin dry with a soft towel or let your skin air dry.

 

Heal and Soothe with a Moisturizing Face Mask:

Easy Like Tzatziki Face Mask:

  • 1/2 Cucumber, peeled & chopped
  • 1 Tbsp Plain (Greek) Yogurt
  • 1-2 drop of Lemon Essential Oil (optional)

– blend ingredients with an immersion blender until smooth

– wash face with warm water to open pores, towel dry and apply mask

– leave mask on for 15 – 20 minutes then rinse off with cool water

 

The cucumber will hydrate and soften the skin and reduce puffiness.  The lactic acid in the yogurt will exfoliate away dry dead skin cells and encourage new cell growth.  The lemon oil is an astringent, good for detoxing, rejuvenating tired, sagging skin, and removing excess oil from the skin.

 

Nourish and Restore your Sexy Summer Hair with a Coconut Oil Hair Mask:

One of the best things you can do for your hair is a regular Coconut Oil Hair Mask.  Coconut oil is great for both the hair and the scalp, containing amino acids that bond with the proteins in your hair to create thicker, stronger hair and seal in moisture, as well as lauric acid that promotes a healthy scalp by treating bacteria that cause dandruff.  Other oils great for promoting hair growth are Peppermint and Rosemary, which both stimulate circulation of the scalp and promote cellular regeneration.  Rosemary is also famous for prolonging hair colour and warding off grey hair.

  • 1-4 Tbsps Organic Coconut Oil (depending on your hair length and thickness)
  • 2 drops Peppermint Essential Oil (optional)
  • 2 drops Rosemary Essential Oil (optional)
  • shower cap & towel (optional)

– mix oils together and apply to dry or towel dried hair

– gently comb though hair, concentrating on putting the most oil on the ends of the hair

– massage scalp for 5 minutes to increase blood flow and encourage oils to absorb

– wrap up long hair in a bun and cover with a shower cap, then wrap a towel around your head (this will help keep the heat from your head in and open up your pores and hair follicles more for a deeper penetrating treatment)

– leave mask on for 30 minutes, then shampoo and condition as usual

– fine or thin hair may require 2 washes to remove all the oils
